Amazon enters the French grocery space

On March 27, Amazon announced it had entered into a partnership with Casino’s supermarket chain Monoprix to sell groceries. This is the first local French grocery retailer that has agreed to sell groceries through the e-commerce giant.

“We consider the Monoprix product selection as exceptional,” Amazon France CEO Frederic Duval said during a media call.

Casino and Amazon said groceries sourced from Monoprix would be available on the Amazon Prime Now app and website through a dedicated virtual store. The deal is limited to Paris and its suburbs. However, during a conference call, Monoprix CEO Regis Schultz said that an extension to other parts of France could not be ruled out. Reuters also reported that the Amazon and Casino were also negotiating a deal in Brazil either partnering or selling Casino’s local appliance and electronics chain Via Varejo.

Monoprix has a network of nearly 800 upmarket stores in more than 250 cities.
