Dollar General Literacy Foundation Awards More Than $10.6 Million

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) last week announced more than $10.6 million in grants to support nearly 1,100 adult, family and summer literacy programs across the country. In total, the grants are expected to positively impact more than 1.4 million individuals. A complete list of grant recipients is available online at www.dgliteracy.org.

With these grants, the Foundation also surpasses helping more than 20 million individuals achieve their educational dreams since its inception in 1993.

“We believe individuals of all ages deserve access to a quality education, and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation is thrilled to support thousands of learners across the country as they enrich their lives with literacy and education,” said Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. “This year’s spring grant cycle is equally exciting as we surpass impacting more than 20 million individuals. We hope these funds provide resources needed to positively change students’ lives, helping them to build a brighter future for themselves and generations to come.”

As part of Dollar General’s ongoing commitment to supporting literacy and education in its hometowns, each year the DGLF awards grants to schools, public libraries and nonprofit organizations within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to help implement or expand existing literacy programs. Funding may be used to help increase access to instruction or advance the quality of instruction, purchase new technology, books, materials or assist with professional development for educators. The Foundation plans to announce its 2024 youth literacy grant recipients in August 2024.

Founded more than 30 years ago, the Foundation has awarded more than $250 million to support more than 24,000 organizations in their efforts to advance equitable access to a quality education and inspire the joy of reading. Additionally, the DGLF plans to launch its fifth annual The Yellow Glasses Project campaign on July 17, 2024, in which customers can purchase yellow sunglasses at Dollar General stores for $2 each to benefit the Foundation.
