E-mart to open PK Market grocery store in May 2019

E-Mart, a South Korean hypermarket retailer that is part of the Shinsegae Group, will open a high-end grocery store called PK Market in the US next year. The move is to test its business in the competitive US market.

“Our goal is to open a PK Market store in the US by May, next year, and sell our selection of Asian food items,” said Chung Yong-jin, vice chairman of Shinsegae Group.

The company’s US store will be designed as a consumer-friendly location that aims to remind them of the’50s and’60s-style traditional markets. The store has chosen Los Angeles as its location and will sell Korean and Asian food, items and ingredients.

E-Mart said it wanted to focus on a more developed market such as the US where there is ‘infinite competition’. The move also comes as the Shinsegae Group looks to expand its global business with plans to open E-Mart stores in Vietnam, Mongolia, and Australia.

The company also plans to enhance its e-commerce platform and business in Korea.
