La Tourangelle’s ROC Certified Oils Launch at Whole Foods this Spring

La Tourangelle’s regenerative organic cooking spray and sunflower oil are now both certified by the Regenerative Organic Alliance. In addition, the Regenerative Sunflower Oil will be available to purchase at Whole Foods beginning March 2023 and the Regenerative Cooking Spray will hit shelves in April.

The Regenerative Organic Alliance exists to promote regenerative organic farming as the highest standard for agriculture around the world and emphasizes farming practices that restore and build soil, ensure animal welfare, and end unfair conditions for farmers and farmworkers. The Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC™) logo is the benchmark for the industry and the most stringent regenerative certification currently available.

“If just one percent of all of the oilseeds grown in the US where over 100 million acres are currently planted were regenerative, it would have the potential to make a huge impact on the climate,” said Matthieu Kohlmeyer, Founder and CEO of La Tourangelle. “To give context, in 2020, our regenerative sunflower oil captured 2.9 million pounds of carbon into the soil, instead of being released into the atmosphere.”

Both La Tourangelle’s ROC Certified Non-Stick Cooking Spray and Sunflower Oil utilize sunflower seeds pressed from Park Farming Organics in Yolo County, where its mill is also located. A pioneer in the organic and regenerative farming movement for two decades, Park Farming cultivates vegetables on 1,680 acres in Northern California. Beginning spring 2022, sunflower seeds were grown organically on 60 acres of land that has not had any chemical amendments in 20 years and that has benefitted from regenerative practices including crop rotation, cover cropping, composting, animal pasturing and no tilling. In 2023, La Tourangelle projects that it will plant 193 acres of sunflower seeds to craft even more regenerative oil.

  • ROC Certified Non-Stick Cooking Spray (available in 5-ounce non-propellent bottles/suggested retail price: $5.99) – A chemical-free alternative that dispenses only two ingredients – non-GMO expeller-pressed sunflower oil and plant-based sunflower lecithin, ensuring a high heat non-stick surface. Sunflower Oil is suitable for baking and cooking, is low in saturated fats and cholesterol, and has a high content of healthy monounsaturated oleic fatty acids, Vitamin E, A, C, and D. The oil is housed in a BPA-free bag surrounded by compressed air and dispensed without shaking with the press of a button. The compressed air ensures that 100 percent of the oil is emptied from the bag, unlike aerosol products that leave behind 10 or more percent of the oil lingering in the can and dispense propellants and chemicals along with the oil.
  • ROC Certified Sunflower Oil (available in 500mL tins/suggested retail price: $9.99) – Made exclusively from expeller-pressed GMO-free organic sunflower seeds, Sunflower Oil is suitable for high-heat cooking, is low in saturated fats and cholesterol, and has a high content of healthy monounsaturated oleic fatty acids, Vitamin E, A, C, and D.

This accomplishment aligns with La Tourangelle’s mission, to make high quality ingredients that are good for the table, community, and planet. In La Tourangelle’s 20-year history, it has become a leader in adopting green practices including, but not limited to: upcycling by using discarded nuts in the production of its various nut oils; housing its sprays in 100% recycled, non-BPA plastic bottles; using post-consumer recycled waste to create plastic packaging; feeding its nut biproduct “cakes” to cattle; and housing its oils in easily recyclable tin cans to protect the oil within. La Tourangelle also donates 2 percent of its revenues and 5 percent of its land in Woodland, CA to community projects that support regenerative agriculture, edible gardens within schools, and food banks.
