Texas Sweet Onions Keep Summer Tasty with Retail Promotions and Consumer Campaigns
With the TX1015 sweet onion season in full swing, retailers across Texas are expanding promotional efforts and merchandising tactics to keep the iconic sweet onion front and center during peak grilling season.
From themed produce displays to recipe inspiration and new point-of-sale materials, TX1015 Sweet Onions are being showcased for their mild sweetness, versatility and Texas-grown heritage. The season’s promotional momentum was showcased at the Viva Fresh Produce Expo in San Antonio, where the Texas onion industry connected with buyers, retailers and produce leaders through an interactive activation celebrating America’s Original Sweet Onion.
“Viva Fresh was the perfect venue to highlight the TX1015 sweet onion because it brings together the industry leaders shaping how consumers experience fresh produce at retail,” said Dante Galeazzi, President of the Texas International Produce Association (TIPA). “Merchandising plays an important role in helping shoppers reconnect with seasonal produce, and we want buyers to see the TX1015 sweet onion as a product that can drive excitement and engagement throughout the season.”
Retail display contests are currently taking place throughout Texas as retailers compete to create eye-catching produce displays featuring TX1015 Sweet Onions. Participating stores are utilizing banners, signage and recipe-focused materials to drive impulse purchases and increase awareness around the seasonal flavor of the Texas-grown sweet onion.
Promotional materials highlight the qualities consumers love most about TX1015 Sweet Onions, including their limited seasonal availability and low pungency, which means less tearing compared to traditional onions. Shoppers are encouraged to scan QR codes featured throughout the campaign for recipe inspiration, cooking tips and behind-the-scenes content from Texas farms and growers.
“Our season lines up perfectly with summer grilling and outdoor entertaining, which creates strong opportunities for retailers to feature TX1015 Sweet Onions in seasonal promotions and meal inspiration,” Galeazzi added. “From burgers and fajitas to salads and cookouts, sweet onions are a natural fit for summer meal planning.”
With ongoing volume expected from the Rio Grande Valley through early-June and the Uvalde region continuing supply into mid-July, retailers still have significant opportunities to promote Texas sweet onions during key summer selling periods, including Memorial Day and Fourth of July promotions. This availability allows retailers to keep Texas-grown sweet onions on the shelf during some of the highest-traffic grilling holidays of the year.
